A New Trend: Hormonal Skincare

Updated: Feb 11

Have you ever wondered why you suddenly experience breakouts in your 40s, even though you never had acne as a teenager? Hormonal changes in our body can cause various skin problems, including acne, dryness and dark spots. To improve the overall health and appearance of our skin, it's helpful to use skincare products and ingredients that help balance skin concerns.

Retinoids are one of the most common hormonal skincare ingredients. These ingredients help regulate sebum production, which is the natural oil produced by our skin that can cause acne if overproduced. They also promote cell turnover, which helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Other ingredients like niacinamide and salicylic acid can also help regulate sebum production and reduce inflammation.

Our formulations avoid synthetic ingredients like retinol. Retinol is synthetic Vitamin A. One of the most concerning side-effects of retinol is that it causes photosensitivity, which means skin becomes sensitive to sunlight and more susceptible to sun damage. Retinol can also cause redness and irritation. Many skin types cannot handle the side effects of retinol.

Instead, we rely on natural ingredients to mimic the benefits of synthetic retinol. For instance:

  • Rose Hip Seed Oil: This ingredient is rich in fatty acids, which help maintain a healthy skin barrier and improve visible signs of aging by preventing moisture loss. You can find Rose Hip Oil in our Rose Gold Facial Serum and Gentle Face Cream.

  • Bakuchiol: This natural alternative to retinol works similarly by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. It comes from the leaves and seeds of the babchi plant. >>To read more about Bakuchiol, click here. You can find Bakuchiol in our Renew + Restore Face Cream and Luminous Eye Serum.

  • Sea Buckthorn Oil: This ingredient is rich in antioxidants, including carotenes, vitamins E and C and flavonoids. It's known to promote collagen production. You can find Sea Buckthorn in our Rose Gold Facial Serum, Luminous Eye Serum and our Deep Hydration Facial Tonic.

  • Niacinamide: This ingredient, available in the form of vitamin B3 and is one of the most efficient cosmetic ingredients. It helps reduce the visible signs of fine lines and wrinkles, brightens the skin along with reducing irritation and redness.

You can find Niacinamide in our Gentle Face Cream.

It's worth noting that hormonal skincare is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating a nourishing diet (according to your body), getting enough sleep, exercising regularly (yoga is amazing!) and managing stress (5 minutes of daily meditation is helpful!) can also contribute to healthy skin.
