Hair Loss + Covid

Recently, every Show I do, without a doubt, several people will share that since contracting Covid-19, they are now experiencing hair loss. I decided to look deeper into what seems to be occurring.

The name of this condition is called telogen effluvium. Telogen effluvium can occur when stress causes hair roots to be pushed prematurely into the resting state. This condition can be acute or chronic. If there is a shock to the system or stress, as many as 70% of the scalp hairs are then shed in large numbers typically about two months after the shock.

This can be he case with Covid. Some of us can experience drastic hair loss about two months after coming down with Covid. For many cases, it can stop after 1-2 months.

It should be stated: not everyone experiences telogen effluvium. While my products cannot stop telogen effluvium, switching to a sulphate-free shampoo can absolutely help nourish your hair during the process. Sulphates can irritate scalp and dry out hair shaft and follicles, making the condition worse. Using a gentle, natural shampoo and conditioner can alleviate brittleness. Natural shampoos are derived from plants and are low-sudsing making them a perfect option to help balance new hair growth.

Also, I recommend using shampoo bottles vs shampoo bars. Depending on how much your hair is shedding, the shampoo bar may pull too much on delicate hair strands. If you or someone you know has experienced hair loss due to Covid, please comment below what your experience has been. I find sharing these experiences allows for support and can help build community around something that can be vulnerable.
