Beyond the Fragrance Facade: Why Language Matters in Skincare

As a formulator trained in cosmetic chemistry, I've watched the evolution of clever marketing terms around fragrance. "Phthalate-free fragrance," "plant-based fragrance," "clean fragrance" - these terms sound reassuring, but they're smoke and mirrors obscuring a deeper truth.
Here's what many don't realize: The "fragrance loophole" in cosmetic regulations allows companies to hide thousands of undisclosed ingredients under the single word "fragrance" or "parfum." Even when branded as "phthalate-free" or "plant-based," these mysterious cocktails can contain hundreds of synthetic compounds that never see the light of day on your ingredient list.
Think about that. A brand can claim "plant-based fragrance" while using just 1% natural ingredients mixed with 99% synthetic compounds. And you, the consumer, have no way to know what's actually in that formula.
This is why my training in cosmetic chemistry feels more like a calling than a career. Understanding the science behind formulation means seeing through these marketing veils. It means recognizing that true skin protection requires complete transparency.

In my formulations, I choose to work exclusively with essential oils at safe, carefully calculated percentages. Why? Because essential oils are whole plant materials with known chemical compositions. When I include lavender essential oil, you know exactly what you're getting - not a proprietary blend hiding behind clever marketing.
The difference matters. Essential oils, when properly formulated:
Have documented chemical compositions
Offer therapeutic benefits beyond scent
Work in harmony with your skin's natural processes
Can be traced to their source
Support both physical and energetic protection
Every formula I create is an act of intention. It's about honoring both the physical barrier of your skin and the energetic boundary it represents. No hidden ingredients. No marketing loopholes. Just pure, purposeful formulation.
Because true protection isn't just about what we put on our skin - it's about the trust between formulator and user, the transparency in our choices, and the integrity in our methods.
Your skin deserves that level of honesty. Your trust demands it.
