Beyond Trends: Why Plant-Based Skincare Stands the Test of Time

Updated: Apr 9

Tallow became popular because of a tiktok reel that went viral. Influencers shared videos highlighting its supposed ancestral benefits, natural composition, and compatibility with skin barrier health.

Skincare should nurture, not just follow trends. While tallow has gained popularity, the reality is not all tallow is created equal. Its nutrient profile depends entirely on the animal’s diet, environment, and exposure throughout its life.

Everything an animal consumes—or encounters—ends up in its fat, including GMOs, antibiotics, hormones, pollutants, pesticides, and heavy metals. This means the quality of tallow varies drastically, making consistency difficult to ensure.

Beyond that, many tallow-based skincare brands don’t formulate their own products—instead, they buy pre-made formulas and repackage them under private labels. As tallow skincare has gained popularity, some brands opt for commercially sourced tallow, which can be a mix of various fat types, including suet, brisket fat, and trimmings. This reduces transparency about sourcing, ethical standards, and purity.

What many don’t realize is tallow doesn’t need to be USDA Certified Organic to be marketed as high quality—leaving room for misleading claims.

Other concerns:

  • Tallow is often marketed as mimicking human sebum but it's not an exact match. Sebum is a complex mix of triglycerides, wax esters, and squalene, whereas tallow primarily consists of saturated fats and lacks the natural waxes that make human oil so unique.

  • Pore-Clogging Potential: Tallow is rich and occlusive, which can be problematic for acne-prone or oily skin. Overuse may lead to clogged pores and breakouts.

  • Allergic Reactions: Some individuals experience redness, itching, or irritation when using tallow-based products, especially if they have sensitivities to animal-derived ingredients.

  • Ethical Concerns: Since tallow is derived from animal fat, it is not suitable for vegans or those who prefer plant-based skincare alternatives.

  • Storage Challenges: Tallow can spoil if not stored properly, leading to contamination or oxidation. It requires cool, dark storage conditions to maintain its integrity.

    • There have been several recalls with commercial tallow (which is where a lot of national brands get their tallow)

  • Scent and Texture: Some people find the natural scent of tallow unpleasant, and its thick texture may feel heavy on the skin compared to lighter plant-based oils.

  • Claims of being "the most natural" moisturizer—Many plant-based oils have been used for centuries and offer potent skin benefits without animal-derived ingredients.

Why Plant-Based Skincare Rises Above These Concerns

Plants are the original medicine. Plants are ancestral healers. Plant-based skincare eliminates uncertainty and prioritizes pure, effective ingredients without relying on animal-derived fats. Instead of questionable sourcing, plant oils provide consistent, powerful nourishment backed by science and sustainability.

Unlike tallow, these oils don’t fluctuate in quality based on diet or exposure. They are carefully cultivated for purity, potency, and effectiveness, ensuring real results without compromise.

Plant-based formulas offer the following benefits:

  • Non-clogging botanical oils, such as rosehip, jojoba, and sweet almond, which are known for being lightweight and suitable for acne-prone skin.

  • Plant oils like rosehip and sea buckthorn offer higher concentrations of Vitamin A and D and more antioxidants than tallow.

  • Skin barrier repair, using plant-derived ceramides and omega-rich ingredients like oat, avocado and aloe.

  • Customization, within my skincare line, you can choose formulas tailored to your specific skin needs and concerns.

Plant-based skincare isn’t a trend—it’s a commitment to integrity, sustainability, and lasting skin health. Skincare should respect both skin and planet, with formulas that restore, protect, and heal.
